Abstract
In an extension of an earlier study, we present experimental evidence for pronounced Franck-Condon/Herzberg-Teller interferences in the firs t singlet transition (1L(b)) of pyrene and chrysene. The experimental observations are compared with the results of calculations based on fi rst-order Herzberg-Teller theory and the floating orbital approximatio n. The calculations succeed for chrysene but not for pyrene. Possible reasons for this failure are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
