F. Wasgestian et al., STRUCTURE-SPECTRA RELATIONSHIPS - CR(III) PHOSPHORESCENCE AS A PROBE FOR STRUCTURAL PHASE-TRANSITIONS IN ALUMS, Coordination chemistry reviews, 159, 1997, pp. 75-84
The structural variety of the alums is reviewed. Structure-spectra rel
ationships are exemplified by the E-2(g)-(4)A(g) phosphorescence of ch
romium alums and chromium-doped aluminium alums. The importance of exc
hange coupling between chromium ions in neat and diluted crystals is d
emonstrated by the concentration dependence of the phosphorescence pro
perties. Structural phase transitions were observed in alums containin
g the monovalent cations Na+, NH4+, K+ and Tl+, but not Rb+ and Cs+. T
he phosphorescence of the ammonium alum is presented in more detail. (
