Ameloblastoma is the most common epithelial odontogenic turner, comprising
1% of tumors and cysts arising in the jaws. We describe two cases of amelob
lastoma of the jaw diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology. The patien
ts presented with swelling in the parotid region. Cytological examination o
f the particulate and sticky bloodstained fluid obtained on aspiration show
ed tightly packed groups of basaloid cells arranged in nests with rounded e
dges. Palisading epithelial cells and squamous cells with spherical keratin
ized bodies were the distinctive cytological features. Histologic examinati
on confirmed the presence of ameloblastoma. (C) 2000 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
