Abstract
The influence of low-lying discrete states on the partition function for el ectron capture and beta decay rates in stellar conditions is discussed. Cal culations are carried out for Fe-56, Fe-57, Co-59 and Co-60. Experimental d ata and different level densities are used. We show that by using a simple but consistent approximation to calculate the nuclear partition function, i t is possible to modify significantly the electron capture and beta decay r ates.
