Md. Mumford et al., PROCESS-BASED MEASURES OF CREATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS .5. OVERALLPREDICTION, Creativity research journal, 10(1), 1997, pp. 73-85
Prior studies have shown that process-based measures of creative probl
em-solving skills can be developed that evidence same predictive valid
ity and contribute to our understanding of creative thought. These stu
dies, however, have focused on a single process. Because multiple proc
esses are involved in creative thought, there is a need to examine the
ir joint impact. To address this issue, 137 undergraduates were asked
to work on 2 creative problem-solving casks and complete a battery of
measures examining relevant abilities and processing skills. Solution
quality and originality scores obtained from the creative problem-solv
ing tasks were regressed on these measures. It was found that the meas
ures of process application were effective predictors of solution qual
ity and originality, yielding significant gains in prediction when add
ed to ability tests. The implications of these findings for the assess
ment of creative potential are discussed.
