During the last five years companies have realized that by restructuring th
eir organizations a significant increase in productivity is feasible. Espec
ially through the decentralization of tasks and the building of self-organi
zing units, tremendous cost reductions can be achieved: this is what is cal
led the fractal approach.
Even if the restructuring process itself is well supported there are still
open questions. What are relevant aspects in the restructuring processes? I
n which steps should a restructuring project be executed and how does the c
ontinuous improvement process and the restructuring process interact?
A survey of 20 restructuring projects tougher with a detailed case study ab
out a learning organization gives important pointers for a smooth transitio
n process. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
