Abstract
Despite the availability of an increasing number of antiretroviral drugs, m any patients still fail to reach or maintain complete viral suppression. Th is is mainly due to the development of HIV drug resistance. In fact, viral replication is both a cause and a consequence of HIV drug resistance. Vario us factors have been involved in the appearance of resistance to antiretrov iral drugs. These factors are related to the host, to drugs, to the physici an, or to the virus. All these factors are at the same time causative agent s or victims of HIV drug resistance. Various aspects of causes and conseque nce of drug resistance are discussed.
