Supervised teaching practice is practical supervision of teaching under the
tutelage of an established teacher. It is proposed as a cost-effective int
egrated approach to linking the support and development of teachers with qu
ality assurance. In modern undergraduate medical curricula increasing value
is placed on teaching and teacher-training. The response to the General Me
dical Council's demand for a new style of undergraduate medical education r
equires a system of practical and continuous training which will ensure the
highest standard among teachers. Supervised teaching practice offers such
a system.
