Abstract
In order to understand the operation of helium-filled proportional counter (HFPC) from the standpoint of fundamental atomic and molecular processes, w e have surveyed previous works on collision processes in discharged helium gas. By analyzing gas gain curve, after-pulses and discharge current experi mentally observed at 4.2 K, the electron avalanche and the secondary electr on emission from cathode have been related to the collision processes in he lium. A simplified model for the HFPC operation at low temperatures near 4. 2 K has been constructed with the related processes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Scie nce B.V. All rights reserved.
