Abstract
Coherent crosstalk mechanisms induced by polarization mode dispersion in po larization multiplexed fiber transmission are examined by systems experimen ts, analysis and supporting modeling. Primary mechanisms include destructiv e interference, edge effects, and beat effects, leading to pulse distortion and to bit-error-rate penalties. Rules of thumb for tolerable crosstalk le vels are developed. (C) 2000 Optical Society of America.
