In 1976 Cramer et al. described a new human variant of von Willebrand disea
se (vWD) characterized by typical findings of vWD and concomitant reduced l
evel of factor WI. This combination was designated von Willebrand disease S
an Diego. We found this combination as well in two human families and in a
dog. A German wirehaired pointer showed increased posttraumatic bleeding in
combination with reduced levels of the factor VIII/von Willebrand factor c
omplex (vWD type I) and a decrease of factor XII:activity to 35 per cent Th
us, certain uncommon findings are not specific for humans. In accordance wi
th other authors it is questionable whether the vWD San Diego is an indepen
dent entity of vWD.
