Abstract
The zwitterionic intermediate, generated by the addition of triphenylphosph ane to dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, undergoes facile addition to ortho- and para-quinones to afford highly functionalized novel unsaturated gamma -spirolactones in moderate to high yields.
