Cryptophilharmostes mahunkai n.gen., n.sp., a remarkable Ceratocanthidae (C
oleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) from the Usambara Mountains (Tanzania), is descri
bed. The morphology of the clypeus and mesoepisternum is discussed, also wi
th reference to other Ceratocanthidae. The affinities of the genus are disc
ussed, and within the Afrotropical fauna a group of genera formed by Philha
rmostes Kolbe and its allies is recognized.
