The association of parvovirus B19 infection and hydrops fetalis is wel
l known. However, the association of parvovirus and fetal pleural or p
ericardial effusions has not been reported. We present five cases of i
solated pleural or pericardial effusion with documented maternal parvo
virus infection in four of these pregnancies, In the absence of struct
ural or karyotypic abnormalities, spontaneous resolution of the effusi
on portends for a successful pregnancy outcome.
