Gv. Polyakov et al., PETROLOGY, GEODYNAMICS, AND ORE POTENTIAL OF MAGMATIC FORMATIONS - REVIEW OF RESULTS AND PROSPECTS OF FORMATIONAL ANALYSIS, Geologia i geofizika, 38(5), 1997, pp. 871-881
The Russian theory of magmatic formations intimately involved with the
school of thought of Academician Yu. A. Kuznetsov is a magma-tectonic
concept based on a modern approach relating composition character of
igneous rocks to geodynamic conditions of their formation. An importan
t result of the evolution of formational analysis of magmatism was tec
tonomagmatic typification and detailed classification of magmatic comp
lexes according to composition. As this school of thought evolved, for
mational petrology advanced its frontiers taking into account not only
physicochemical parameters but also geological (tectonic, geodynamic,
evolutional) factors; present-day petrology of magmatic formations fo
llows the same way. Concepts of magmatic formations provided a base of
Russian magmatic metallogeny; a similar approach with recognition of
tectonical or geodynamical types of magmatism and identification of th
eir metallogenic specialization is now acceptable in the world's pract
ice. The formational approach to study of magmatic complexes seems to
be promising in the further development of the problems mentioned and
in geological survey and searching for mineral resources.
