The majority of Tetrahymena thermophila cells in the stationary phase of gr
owth was arrested in their cell cycle at G1 phase by low molecular weight s
ubstances released by the cells themselves and accumulated in the culture m
edium. The experiments for understanding the mechanism of G1 arrest in the
stationary phase showed that the substances could arrest the cell cycle if
the cells were in G1 and S phases.
