Stress intensity factors in a cylinder with a circumferential crack are eva
luated. An indirect method, the computing compliance method, is developed t
o study the problem. The stress intensity factor is obtained from the displ
acement response for two crack length cases, a and a + Deltaa. The finite d
ifference method is used to solve the boundary value problem. Numerical exa
mples are given which demonstrate the effect of cylinder length on the stre
ss intensity factor. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
