R. Dallos et L. Hamilton-brown, Pathways to problems - an exploratory study of how problems evolve vs dissolve in families, J FAM THER, 22(4), 2000, pp. 375-393
A social constructionist and a systemic lens are combined to consider the n
ature of the development of problems in families. An exploratory qualitativ
e study is presented in which families were invited to discuss their constr
uctions of the onset of difficulties and their subsequent progression. Qual
itative data are presented from two groups of families: where there had bee
n spontaneous recovery (SR) as opposed to where the problems were still cur
rent (PC). The findings suggest that a combination of factors, including he
lpful inputs in the form of practical assistance and non-pathologizing defi
nitions can help avert descent into pathology. However, the ability of fami
lies to recognize and utilize positive inputs also appeared to be related t
o their available resources, including their 'spare emotional capacity'. Th
e findings lend some weight to the clinical view that early validation and
support is essential for families to help them to utilize their natural sel
f-healing capabilities.
