We investigate theoretically and experimentally the conditions for light-in
duced excitation of surface plasmons at an aluminum-liquid interface in the
Kretschmann configuration. The widths of the plasmon resonance curves are
shown to be so broad that this aluminum layer system can be easily used to
tune the surface-plasmon resonance for Various applications of surface-plas
mon-enhanced evanescent fields. The experimental results are found to be in
good agreement with the theoretical estimates.
