Planar electrochromatography has been performed on nonwetted silica gel and
aluminium oxide layers. The electric field influences the migration veloci
ty or the mobile phase (thus affecting chromatogram development time), the
migration of chromatographed substances, and the shape of chromatographic p
eaks. The effect has been shown for a nonpolar binary mobile phase and nonp
olar chromatographed substances (PAW) and for a polar mobile phase and pola
r chromatographed substances (phenol and quinoline derivatives). The electr
ic field has different effects on the chromatographic process on the anode
and cathode sides of the chromatogram.
