The past decade has witnessed an explosion in our understanding of the mole
cules involved in transplant rejection and acceptance. This review highligh
ts our current understanding of antigen recognition, signal transduction, a
nd effector mechanisms of the immune system. Such information has proven im
portant in understanding the action of immunosuppressive drugs and will pro
