The polymeric product formed by reacting C-60 or C-70 fullerenes with ozone
, called "ozopolymer", which is insoluble in non-polar solvents but soluble
in water and in methanol was studied by electronic, FT-IR, H-NMR and solid
state C-13-NMR spectroscopy as well as by elemental analysis. The structur
e and formation of the product is discussed in the framework of the experim
ental results and Criegee's mechanism of ozonation of unsaturated compounds
. The thermal behaviour of the C-60 ozopolymer was studied by DSC and simul
taneous TGA-DTA. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
