Microbial responses to chemicals manifest themselves in a variety of f
orms depending on the chemical, the type of microorganism, the concent
ration, the exposure time, and other chemical, physical, biological, a
nd environmental factors. Barriers to quantifying the effects of chemi
cals on microorganisms frequently are related to methodological or ana
lytical limitations, Recent developments in methodologies used to eval
uate chemical-microbial interactions are summarized in this paper. A b
rief overview of recent studies on microbial responses to specific che
micals is provided in tabular form categorized by chemical and microor
ganism.
