Ma. Phelps et Pl. Forster, Assessment of psychotic symptoms: Distinguishing between functionaland medically-induced psychosis, CRISIS INT, 6(2), 2000, pp. 101-107
While functional psychosis and medically-induced psychotic disorders outwar
dly appear to have similar presentations, clinician familiarity with the di
fferences between them is essential for effective treatment as the conseque
nces of misidentification range from inappropriate hospital admissions to p
reventable fatalities. This paper will clarify the differences between func
tional and medically-induced psychoses and provide useful guidelines to ass
ess patients for medical referral.
