In the 1980s, the VME bus became established as the most widely used indust
rial bus. Rising bit rates and the continuous increase in integration led t
o its expansion to a 64bit data and address bus. This feature describes the
work carried out to ensure the signal integrity (SI) of connectors that fa
cilitate the bus expansion. It provides an object lesson for the implicatio
ns of the proposed expansion of any parallel bus.
