Abstract
Perry Slingsby Systems have recently initiated a new cable burial Research & Development project as part of an overall cable burial system development program. The project sets out to investigate the effect of water jetting o n stiff to very stiff clay soils. To date, such soils have generally been b eyond the capabilities of the industry's existing cable burial and maintena nce ROV fleet. However, Perry Slingsby Systems have found that it is becomi ng increasingly important for users to be able to extend the range of seafl oor conditions in which burial can effectively take place. Ferry Slingsby's intention is that the project will eventually lead to the delivery of a ne w range of high capable jet burial equipment. This technical note describes the background and methodology to the first s tage of the test program. It also details the selection of suitable soil te st beds which were used to model stiff clay seafloor conditions. The test a pparatus and procedures are also described and indications of the type of r esults obtained are given.
