A. Shunnaq, Arabic-English translation of political speeches (Delivered by Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser, 1954-1970), PERSP ST TR, 8(3), 2000, pp. 207-228
The present article deals with repetitive and emotive expressions in Gamal
Abdul Nasser's political speeches with reference to Arabic-English translat
ion. It argues that 'repetition' and 'emotiveness' are of paramount signifi
cance in translating Arabic political discourse and that successful transla
tion must deal with these phenomena. This article draws on twenty authentic
excerpts of Nasser's speeches translated from Arabic into English by the a
uthor. Further, the article categorizes examples involving 'repetition' int
o (i) functional repetitions of parallel structure and (ii) functional repe
tition created through semantic elaborations. It categorizes other examples
involving 'emotiveness' into four levels: (i)phonological, (ii)morphologic
al, (iii)lexical and (iv)semantic. The article stresses the importance of t
he translator's awareness of repetition and emotiveness, as well as other f
eatures such as hyperbole, humor, and metaphors.
