Corticosteroids administered by the nasal route are indicated in the treatm
ent of allergic rhinitis. Their effects on the symptoms, such as nasal obst
ruction or rhinorrhea, are superior to those of oral antihistamines. Among
local corticosteroids, fluticasone propionate is effective on the nasal sym
ptomatology of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis. Fluticasone decreas
es the number of days with nasal obstruction, sneezing, nasal pruritus or r
hinorrhea and improves the patients' qualify of life. Its action time is ra
pid and is maintained over the course of time. In addition, its local toler
ance is good. (C) 2000 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS.
