Thermal dissociation in air of aluminum hydroxide intercalation compounds o
f the general formula [LiAl2(OH)(6)],(Medta) . xH(2)O (where M = CU2+, Ni2, Co2+, Zn2+; edta(4-) is an ethylenediaminetetraacetato anion) was investi
gated by DTA-TG and X-ray powder diffraction. The ultimate product of calci
nation at 1200 degreesC is a mixture of oxides: gamma -LiAlO2, spinel solid
solution, and, in cases of nickel and copper, the transition-metal oxide.
Scanning electron microscopy showed that, even after high-temperature treat
ment, the thermolysis products have a layered morphology similar to the mor
phology of virgin samples.
