Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) has become an important cause of sev
ere infection in hospitalized patients ail over the world. In Germany a sig
nificant increase of nosocomial infections due to MRSA has occurred during
the last 10 years. Especially elderly patients with chronic illnesses are a
t increased risk of becoming colonized or infected with MRSA. This report f
ocuses on epidemiology and therapy of MRSA, and on the recommendations conc
erning management and prevention of spread of MRSA in hospitals and nursing
homes.
