A series of polyhydroxy-polyene compounds were isolated from the cultu
red dinoflagellate Amphidinium klebsii as well as from its surrounding
media. Amphidinol 5 (AM 5) and 6 (AM 6) were found to be potent antif
ungal and hemolytic agents. Their permeabilizing activity towards phos
pholipid liposomes was markedly enhanced by the presence of cholestero
l within the bilayer, indicating that the mechanism of action involved
interaction with membranal cholesterol.
