The epiphytic bryophytes in the city of Ghent were investigated in November
1998. A total of 2152 trees, belon, ging to thirty eight species, were sear
ched for bryophytes. Twenty five moss- and two liverworts species were foun
d, most of which were very common species with a broad range of tolerance.
Multivariate analyses revealed that the tree species could be divided into
three groups according to the species composition of the bryophytes. These
groups differed in the hardness and the furrowing of the bark.
