This paper presents a low-cost battery-powered drive using switched relucta
nce motors. The converter topology proposed in this paper is cost effective
while still maintaining an energy-efficient system for battery-powered dri
ves, The proposed drive not only achieves cost-effective and efficient batt
ery motoring, but also battery charging with minimal additional power semic
onductor components. Charging is achieved through the windings of the switc
hed reluctance motor, thus eliminating the need of external bulky transform
ers and separate charging units.
