Sugar recovery and quality are important factors for modern mills and refin
eries. Advances in polymer science and membrane manufacture have spurred re
search and development efforts in desugarisation, This paper covers the maj
or trends in new process development over the past 10 years with emphasis o
n membrane and chromatographic technologies. It analyses the incorporation
of chromatographic desugarisation into the sugar cane industry, Results on
chromatographic desugarisation of syrups in cane mills are presented and di
scussed.
