Abstract
States with a definite, and known, photon number-Fock states-can be prepare d in a one-atom maser by conditioning the photon state to the results of st ate-selective atom detection. This requires a cyclic pump scheme in which l ong periods of relaxation separate short periods of pumping. The theoretica l analysis presented here is in very good agreement with the experimental d ata reported recently.
