Alkylation of (phenylseleno)acetonitrile 1 with alkyl iodides provides preferentially monoalkylated derivatives 3 with LiHMDS as base. 2-(Ph enylseleno) nitriles 3 yield dialkylated derivatives in excellent yiel ds.
