In this paper the polarized optical spectra (absorption and fluorescence) o
f the Nd3+ ion in the Gd-2(MoO4)(3) non-linear crystal have been investigat
ed at low (10 K) and room temperature. Results obtained from low-temperatur
e experiments have been used to obtain the energy level diagram and also to
identify two non-equivalent centres of Nd3+ ions in this crystal. The Judd
-Ofelt formalism is applied to the room temperature absorption spectra. and
the relevant spectroscopic parameters (quantum efficiency and emission cro
ss section) for laser applications have been estimated. Infrared-to-visible
up-conversion in this host crystal is reported for the first time. Finally
, continuous-wave laser experiments are carried out and from them, optimal
conditions for generation of green laser light are established.
