A population balance model is presented for describing the direct particle-
to-particle heat transfer in fluid-solid processing systems. In developing
the model, simple kinetic equations are assumed to describe the heat transf
er process, but the particle-particle interactions are considered stochasti
c. A new approach is used to develop the population balance equation. The m
oment equations are derived and analysed. The time evolution of the populat
ion density function, determined by numerical solution of the integro-diffe
rential equation, is also presented. (C) 2000 IMACS. Published by Elsevier
