The Infinite Velocity Method has been applied to evaluate energy distr
ibutions of molecular MCs+ secondary ions with respect to the spatial
and temporal correlation of the atoms forming the molecule. The MCs+ e
nergy distributions of several elemental targets (Zn, Ge, Cu, Ni, Mo),
as well as elements contained in the NBS standard 1261A, were measure
d. It is shown that the efficiency of molecule formation decreases acc
ording to an exponential law with the inverse of the mean emission vel
ocity of MCs+. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
