The chief advances observed over the last 15 years in the treatment of mult
iple myeloma arise from intensive procedures and in particular autologous b
one marrow transplantation. However, even if autologous bone marrow transpl
antation increases the rate of total remissions, no plateau is yet observab
le in the survival curve and transplantation is probably not a curative the
rapy. Hopes for the future seem to rest on intensive chemotherapy combined
with innovative therapeutic approaches such as diphosphonates, thalidomide
or immunotherapy.
