Abstract
Small, size-selected Cr, clusters deposited onto Ru(001) have been studied by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Broad, bulk-like L-3 absorption line shapes are observed for all clusters. Sizeable shifts in X-ray absorption energy after flash heating are indicative of diffusion or surface alloying. Pure Cr-n clusters can be easily oxidised, yielding Cr2O3-like X-ray absor ption signals. The results are discussed in comparison to Cr-n clusters dep osited onto (1 x 1)O/Ru(001).
