G. Neyer et al., Living as a foreigner - living with foreigners Austrian re-migrants, theirexperiences as foreigners abroad and with foreigners in Austria, ZEITGESCHIC, 27(3), 2000, pp. 172-193
This article presents the results of a qualitative research project on the
xenophobia of Austrian re-migants who had lived much of their lives in Swit
zerland or the Republic of South Africa. Re-migrants from Switzerland used
other criteria than those from South Africa in differentiating between them
selves and "foreigners" or "others". The re-migrants' definition of "foreig
ner" and "other" depends on the political, social, and normative contexts o
f the country they live in and on the economic opportunities they see for t
hemselves.
