This special issue of Archives of Animal Breeding presents thirteen papers
of oral presentations and nine short communications of poster presentations
of the satellite symposium "Animal Well-Being and Coping with Stress in Fa
rm Animals" held from the 17(th) to 18(th) May 2000 in Dummerstorf. The int
roductory remarks of the symposium coordinators give a short overview of th
e subject, emphasizing that a scientifically grounded theoretical approach
to the complex problem of 'well-being' and 'stress' as well as the resultin
g practical applications should regard the influence of a manifold of diffe
rent influences in order to develop future breeding systems more animal fri
endly without impairing the economic output.
