Rc. Oliveira et al., A suitable procedure to choose antimicrobials as controlling agents in fermentations performed by bacteria, BRAZ J MICR, 31(2), 2000, pp. 87-89
This work evaluated the influence of nitrofurantoin, erythromycin and strep
tomycin at 50, 25 and 12,5% of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) o
n maximum specific growth rate (mu (max)) and specific polymer accumulation
rate (mu (PHB)) Of Alcaligenes eutrophus, considered resistant to those an
timicrobials. Nitrofurantoin strongly affected mu (max) even at 50% MIC. St
reptomycin moderately affected mu (max) Only at 50%MIC. Nitrofurantoin show
ed the most harmful effect on mu (PHB) when 50% MIC was applied and erythro
mycin was not harmful.
