Abstract
The problem of existence of (generalized) backward shifts on Banach spaces C(X, E) of continuous functions from a compact Hausdorff space X into a sep arable Hilbert space E has been raised at a conference in Nashville, Tennes see in 1996. Here we solve the problem completely in the more general setti ng when E is an arbitrary Banach space with E* strictly convex. (C) 2000 Ed itions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS.
