Synthesis of a cationic surfactant, N-a-lauroyl arginine methyl ester hydro
chloride (LAM) has been carried out in gel emulsions of the system water/C1
4E4/decane. The yields of LAM synthesized in gel emulsions are comparable t
o those obtained in conventional dimethylformamide (DMF) media. The rate of
LAM formation is faster in gel emulsions at short times, the reaction taki
ng place without mechanical energy input and at 25 degreesC. (C) 2001 Elsev
