Abstract
The human genome is rife with the proviral remains of many ancient retrovir
uses. The past year has seen significant progress in understanding the stru
cture, distribution and potential function of many of these elements. Altho
ugh hypotheses concerning the potential effects of these elements are commo
n, however, incisive experiments to test any functions remain much less so.
