Scalp recordings of the electroencephalogram (EEG) have been used in associ
ation with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) investigatio
ns as a safety measure in monitoring ongoing EEG activity and as a neurophy
siologic tool in examining the specific effects induced by the magnetic sti
mulus On the EEG or evoked potentials (EPs). Medline review on the use of E
EG or EPs with rTMS reveals that this area has been largely unexplored. Lim
ited available studies ies attest to the potentinal for studies combining E
EG/EPs and rTMS to be useful in further elucidating the normal brain physio
logy. Herein, we report on our experience with continuous EEG sampling comb
ined with rTMS in patients with major depression (n = 14), schizophrenia (n
= 7), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (n = 5). Our data support the prac
tice of using continuous EEG monitoring when the stimulation parameters fal
l outside established safety guidelines. (C) 2000 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
