The identification and treatment of dysrhythmias continues to be an evolvin
g issue for the emergency physician. Advances in electrophysiology and card
iopharmacology have enlightened the medical community to the ever increasin
g complexity of cardiac arrhythmias, and pharmacologic interventions once r
eserved for cardiologists are now being incorporated into emergency departm
ent (ED) practice. The authors review basic physiology discuss classificati
on schemes, and address pharmacologic interventions that have proven or pot
ential benefit for common dysrhythmias.
