The elastic alpha + He-8 phase shifts are calculated with a two-centre gene
rator-coordinate method. The microscopic alpha and He-8 internal wave funct
ions are defined in the harmonic-oscillator model. Bound states and resonan
ces of Be-12 are obtained. Among them, a 4(+) resonance with a molecular st
ructure should be observable in elastic scattering. The parity dependence o
f the microscopic phase shifts is analyzed by fitting them with simple pote
ntials. The odd-even effect is similar in the alpha + He-8 and alpha + He-6
phase shifts for low partial waves but decreases more rapidly with increas
ing orbital momentum for alpha + He-8.
